Dr. Renn O. Holness, has received the Canadian Neurosurgical Society’s (CNSS) Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his outstanding career and significant contribution to Neurosurgery. Dr. Holness attained the Gold Medal in the 1968 Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, obtaining Honours in Medicine and Surgery. Dr. Holness has saved numerous car accident victims from the catastrophic results of injury and death.
He served as Professor and Head of the Department of Neurosurgery, Dalhousie University from 1987 to 1994, President of the Canadian Neurological Society, (1995- 1996) and Chairman of the Examining Board in Neurosurgery, Royal College of Physicians of Canada from 1997 to 2000.
In 1992, Dr. Holness became the first neurosurgeon in Canada to perform fetal tissue transplants for Parkinson’s disease.
Dr. Holness is an Examiner in Neurosurgery in the DM (UWI) Neurosurgery Programme and teaches surgical residents and medical students at the Cornwall Regional Hospital in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Since Holness Law Group was founded in 1999 Dr. Holness has been an invaluable resource for for client’s suffering brain and severe spinal cord injury.
He was Professor and Head of Neurosurgery until 2000,examiner then chair of The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPS) examining board in Neurosurgery, and secretary then president of the Canadian Neurosurgical Society (’92-’95).
Dr.Holness retired from Dalhousie Medical School in 2009 and has been busy travelling back and forth to Jamaica setting up a Neurosurgical services at Cornwall Regional Hospital, Montego Bay, teaching and examining medical students and residents.
Dr. Holness received the The Charles Drake Medal Lifetime Achievement Award at the Annual Congress of the Canadian Neurological Sciences Federation Congress in Quebec City, June 21 – 24, 2016.
